From Fishing Village to Growing Coastal Community
Sneads Ferry started as a ferry crossing on the New River in the 1700s. The ferry ran until a bridge replaced it in 1939, and the community is still known for its shrimp boats and its annual Shrimp Festival. It's grown a lot since 2000, driven largely by access to Camp Lejeune through the gate on NC 172 and the growth of Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC), reached from NC 210.
Housing ranges widely: ranch and Craftsman-style homes, townhomes, manufactured homes, newer construction, and waterfront homes in communities like Chadwick Shores, Mimosa Bay, New River Plantation, North Shore Country Club and Oyster Landing near the bridge to Topsail Island.
What the Coast Does to Gutters
Wind. Homes facing open water take the full force of storms. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Loose hangers and long unsupported runs are the first things to fail, so ask about hidden hangers screwed into solid wood at close spacing.
Salt air. Aluminum doesn't rust like galvanized steel, but fasteners, hangers and downspout straps matter too. Ask what they're made of.
Heavy rain. The area averages roughly 56 to 59 inches of rain a year (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). During Hurricane Florence, the National Weather Service listed neighboring North Topsail Beach among the hardest-hit areas.
Sandy soil. Water from a downspout can dig a hole in sandy ground fast and wash out under walkways and slabs. Extensions, splash blocks or buried lines help. See downspouts and drainage.
Raised homes. If your home is elevated or has a tall roofline, mention it in the form. Taller homes need longer downspouts and different equipment, and that affects the quote.

Mature Trees and Wooded Lots
Some of Sneads Ferry's established waterfront neighborhoods, like Chadwick Shores, are known for mature trees. Oak leaves and pine needles fill gutters quickly, and wet debris sitting in gutters near salt water isn't doing the metal any favors. Gutter guards cut down on cleanings, and a regular gutter cleaning before storm season keeps water moving.

Second Homes and Rentals
The 2020 census found about 31% of housing units in the Sneads Ferry CDP were vacant at the time of the count. Census "vacant" includes seasonal and vacation homes, so many of those are second homes and rentals. If you own a home here but don't live in it full time:
- Schedule a gutter cleaning and inspection before the busiest part of hurricane season
- Ask the contractor to send photos when the work is done
- After a big storm, have someone check for loose or damaged sections. See gutter repair

Sneads Ferry Gutter FAQ
Can the work be done while I'm away?
Often, yes, especially cleanings and exterior repairs. Note it in the form, and the contractor will let you know what they need.
What gutter material holds up best near salt water?
Aluminum is the most common choice on the coast because it doesn't rust like steel. Copper is a premium option. Ask about the hangers and fasteners too.
Are North Topsail Beach and Topsail Island covered?
Coverage depends on the contractor. Include your address in the form to check.
Should I have gutters checked before hurricane season?
Yes. Clean gutters and tight hangers handle wind and heavy rain far better than clogged or loose ones.
